The Wreck

My life rattles past the window without me,

shuddering, straining, letting out its long low

one-note cry and pawing, Cyclopean, at the

darkness, rocked beneath the weight of wild

celebrants and sleeping brakeman, laughs and

toasts and broken glass, midnight resolutions

and morning repentances, sloppy kisses and

confessions, waving flags, second thoughts,

false starts, the jolt of molten gold and fist

fights in the bathroom, trailing scents of

buttered popcorn and the sounds of polkas,

salsa and brass-band atrocities, racing toward

god-crumpled tracks, the sundered trestle, a

graveyard of steaming engines and darkened

cars, while I lie safely in your bed and wonder

if I'm grateful.
